Invisalign is a clear alternative method to straighten your teeth without wearing metal orthodontics. The clear braces are a great option for any adult or teen who wants to boost their self-confidence and improve their oral health by creating a straighter smile.
Once you’ve started your Invisalign treatment, there are certain actions that you should take to make sure that your experience is as successful as possible.
Here’s what you should know:
1. Wear Your Aligners At Least 22 Hours Each Day
To get the very best results from your Invisalign treatment, wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day or more. This gives you enough time to remove them during meals and for brushing and flossing – but that’s it!
2. Mark Your Aligner Changes on Your Calendar
Stay up to date with changing out your Invisalign trays. In most cases, you will want to progress to the next series of aligners every 2 weeks. Missing your change-out date means pushing your desired results back further than necessary.
3. Keep Your Invisalign Braces in a Safe Place
Store your aligners in a safe place during meals. If you sit them on your plate or at a desk, they could easily get thrown away or lost. Without your aligners in, your teeth will start to drift back out of place in a relatively short period of time.
4. Don’t Miss Your Follow Up Visit
Being on time for each of your follow up visits means that you’ll be able to pick up your new sets of aligners and keep your treatment schedule right on track! Getting behind a day or two every month will push your results back further than it should normally take.
5. Keep Your Invisalign Trays Clean
Remember that your aligners need to be cleaned too. When you stop to brush your teeth twice each day, use tap water and a soft toothbrush to clean your Invisalign trays at the same time. Otherwise they can harbor plaque and stain that may spread to your smile.

6. Make Sure You’re Flossing
One of the joys of Invisalign is that they don’t get in the way of flossing. When traditional orthodontic patients struggle with keeping their teeth free of cavities, Invisalign patients have an upper hand. Be sure to floss at least once a day. If you have a difficult time with flossing, ask us about different aids or water flossing as an alternative.
7. Always Remove Invisalign During Meals
Although Invisalign braces are extremely durable, you shouldn’t wear them when you’re eating food. Biting and chewing with Invisalign could break your aligners or alter their shape so that they aren’t effective.
8. Rinse Your Mouth Throughout the Day
If you tend to sip on coffee throughout the day, you don’t have to take your alignment trays out. But, we do recommend removing them regularly to rinse both your teeth and trays of any bacteria, acids, or food particles that can build up. Doing so also reduces your risk of tooth decay.
9. Whiten Your Teeth at the Same Time
It’s safe and effective to use your Invisalign braces as a temporary set of whitening trays during your treatment. A small amount of prescription grade whitening gel can be placed into the aligner to brighten your teeth while you’re also straightening them. At The MIAMI Institute, we make a variety of gels available to fit the specific concerns of each patient’s smile. Ask us which one is best for your teeth!
