Smile Makeover

What is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover includes a treatment plan that addresses the function of your teeth and the health of your gums which restores and repairs missing or broken teeth. Just as no two patients are the same, no two smile makeovers will be the same, each smile makeover will be individually crafted to meet the needs of an individual patient. The finishing touch may then include teeth whitening and/or veneers for a dazzling smile!

While treatment plans will vary from patient to patient, most smile makeovers do include dental implants, porcelain crowns, and veneers. One thing that every smile makeover patient shares is a reason to smile from having functional and beautiful teeth.

What Constitutes a Smile Makeover

What do we mean by a ‘smile makeover?’ A smile makeover is when an experienced practitioner evaluates the overall state of your oral health and tailors a plan for enhancing it. A smile makeover typically starts with a consultation or evaluation and then first addresses matters of pressing health concern. Ultimately, you will work your way up until you put the finishing touches on your smile with beautiful smile enhancement treatments.

Smile Makeover may include:

  • Dental restorations
  • Necessary dental surgeries
  • Dental implants
  • Veneers
  • Crowns
  • Bonding
  • Teeth whitening

Not all of these options are needed for every patient to enjoy a complete smile makeover. At Barsky DDS, we regard every client as a unique individual.

What are the Benefits of a Smile Makeover?

There are many benefits to a smile makeover, including health and cosmetic benefits, including:

  • Prevent and treat dangerous infections
  • Prevent and reverse bone loss
  • Prevent and treat gum disease
  • Prevent and treat root decay

  • Repair broken or damaged teeth, reducing pain and sensitivity while enhancing diet options
  • Replacing missing or broken teeth, reducing the risk of infection, bone loss, while enhancing diet options
  • Restore or protect the shape of the jaw

It is easy to see that there are many health benefits that result from a smile makeover. A patient’s overall oral health can benefit tremendously from a smile makeover plan of action.

However, in addition to the health benefits a smile makeover offers, there are also many cosmetic benefits, including:

  1. Brighter, whiter teeth
  2. Straighter teeth
  3. Removal of gaps between and overcrowding of teeth
  4. Fresher breath
  5. Fill in large gaps in smile
  6. Restore and protect jaw shape

What does a Smile Makeover Include?

Each smile makeover is customized to an individual patient, so there is no set list of procedures involved in a smile makeover. However, there are some common treatments used in many smile makeovers. Broadly speaking, a smile makeover may include:

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a procedure to install fixed, permanent teeth in a patient’s mouth to replace missing or broken teeth. The dental implants procedure involves implanting small, metal posts in the jaw, and affixing artificial teeth to those posts. Dental implants may require bone grafts depending on the strength of a patient’s jaw, and there are several different varieties of dental implant procedures.

One of the most popular is known as all-on-4 dental implants. In this procedure a prosthodontist can install as few as four implants to support permanent bridgework or dentures. The result is a brand new smile with minimum effort or investment.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are one of the most common ways to resolve stains, discoloration, and small chips or cracks on the front of teeth. A dental veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that is bonded to the front of the tooth. The porcelain matches the color and texture of a patient’s natural teeth, and helps make smiles appear brighter and whiter while providing a protective covering to prevent further damage.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to restore and protect teeth that have been chipped, broken, or damaged. Dental crowns are an artificial cap that covers the tooth, preventing additional damage while preventing infection and reducing pain and sensitivity. Dental crowns will also make a patient’s smile brighter and whiter, while filling in gaps and covering up broken teeth.

Teeth Whitening

For teeth that are stained or discolored but do not have any structural damage, teeth whitening is a common option. It involves a series of at-home treatments using a special gel, as well as office visits that use a stronger product to help lift stains and discoloration that are located deep within the tooth. The teeth whitening procedures and substances that oral care professionals have available to them can be far more effective than those sold over the counter to patients directly, and many patients have praised the results they get from a professional teeth whitening versus the over-the-counter options.

Planning Your Smile Makeover

The most important step in your smile makeover process is your initial consultation. We will invite you to make yourself at home in one of our private consultation rooms so that you can discuss your concerns openly in a pressure-free and zero-judgment environment.

At your consultation, treatment planning will take into consideration factors such as the following:

  • The presence and extent of existing oral disease
  • The alignment, shape, and color of your teeth
  • The way your smile should accentuate your skin hue and the shape of your face
  • The shape and appearance of your gums
  • How many teeth are missing or need to be replaced
  • The efficiency and comfort of your bite

The purpose of a smile makeover is to restore the function of the smile you once enjoyed and then enhance it so that you can smile more vibrantly than ever before. Whether your smile has suffered from the effects of cavities or fractures or you just want to lighten the color of your teeth a bit, then a smile makeover could benefit you.

The Treatment Process

Our dental experts have years of experience and specialized training in creating exceptional new smiles with dental crowns, bonding, veneers, and other restorative techniques. If you discover that dental surgery is needed to restore the beauty and function of your smile, you’ll be pleased to learn that the doctor is able to work closely with an experienced oral surgeon to perform procedures like implant placement.

Smile Makeover by a Prosthodontist

Board-certified prosthodontists offer a number of advantages for patients when compared to other oral health professionals when it comes to getting a smile makeover. In addition to the standard four years of dentistry school, a prosthodontist must be three years in an intensive and closely supervised residency.

The adult mouth is very complex and requires and expert. So proper dental care is also complex and involves a combination of prevention, correction and maintenance. When a generally healthy mouth is not adequately maintained over time, small problems can quickly turn into larger ones and that is when it is time to see a specialist. A prosthodontist assesses the complex situation at hand, creates a treatment plan and proceeds by rebuilding the health of your mouth, setting a strong foundation.

A Prosthodontist will discuss with you how to restore full function to your teeth through implants, crowns, bridges and a variety of other options to assure a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing smile. Your teeth and oral health are the gateway to good general health. If the foundation is solid and your maintenance is kept on schedule, your beautiful smile will look youthful and effortless!

The Advantages of Seeing a Prosthodontist for a Smile Makeover

Board-certified prosthodontists offer a number of advantages for patients when compared to other oral health professionals when it comes to getting a smile makeover. In addition to the standard four years of dentistry school, a prosthodontist must be three years in an intensive and closely supervised residency.

During this residency, a prosthodontist will learn how to use to latest technologies and techniques in modern dentistry, and will also learn about the cosmetic and health aspects of smiles. Following the residency, a prosthodontist may apply for certification, which can take another two years and includes a series of rigorous examinations and qualifications.

The extra five or more years of experience that a prosthodontist has, combined with the specialized training in ensuring that smiles are not only functional, but beautiful, means that a board-certified prosthodontist has the skills and experience patients are looking for when seeking to develop a smile makeover plan of action. A prosthodontist will be able to identify the best combination or procedures to enhance and restore a particular patient’s smile.
