What is Teeth Bonding & Dental Bonding?

Teeth bonding and dental bonding are a process that restores smiles through the application of a special resin to the afflicted areas of the teeth. The result is a restored and natural-looking smile.

What Is Teeth Bonding Used For

Dental bonding is ideally performed for your front teeth to erase minor to moderate aesthetic concerns.

The cosmetic flaws that bonding can help repair include:

  • Small fractures
  • Chips
  • Cavities
  • Rough areas
  • Discolorations
  • Sharp edges and points
  • Exposed root surfaces

Dental bonding is ideal for teeth that do not require extensive work. Bonding preserves the majority of a tooth’s structure because little, if any, preparation is needed. A simple resin-based compound is blended to match your natural teeth and is artfully smoothed and cured into place over the tooth.

What are the Benefits of Teeth Bonding & Dental Bonding?

There are many benefits patients report after having a teeth bonding procedure. Some of the most common include better smile and increased sense of well-being. Moreover, for some patients, dental bonding also has advantages over other possible procedures they might consider.

Better Smile

Teeth bonding and dental bonding create a better looking smile. Awkwardly shaped, chipped, or cracked teeth can cause some patients to feel self-conscious about their smile. Dental bonding looks natural, and is customized to match the shape and color of your teeth, resulting in a smile patients are proud to share.

Increased Well-Being

An improved smile isn’t merely a cosmetic issue. Patients have reported a greater sense of well-being because they feel better about smiling in public and when they’re with friends and family. Having the ability to smile confidently can decrease a patients overall level of stress and allow them to get more enjoyment from their interactions with other people, further improving their overall sense of well-being.

Teeth Bonding & Dental Bonding vs Other Options

Teeth that have small chips, cracks, or discoloration can be repaired with teeth bonding techniques. Additionally, teeth bonding may be a better option for some patients when compared to other procedures.

It is frequently less expensive than other cosmetic procedures, saving patients money
It is usually faster than other procedures, cutting down trips and saving patients time
It preserves more of the natural tooth than other procedures, which makes it ideally suited for minor damage when more intensive procedures aren’t called for.

It is important to consult with a board certified prosthodontist before making any decisions about the best solution for your particular situation. If you live in Pine Crest, Coral Gables, Miami, or South Florida, schedule an appoint with Dr. Barsky to help determine if teeth bonding and dental bonding are right for you.

Planning for Dental Bonding

Your initial consultation at Barsky DDS is going to be the most important part of your experience with us. The visit will allow you to get acquainted with the doctor. He will also be able to explain to you in full detail the nature of any procedure you decide on.

The doctor will let discuss with you the three most important elements in enhancing your smile with teeth bonding:

  1. A discussion about the color of your teeth, and an explanation of the techniques used to match the color of the dental bond to your natural tooth color.
  2. A discussion about the shape of your teeth, and an explanation of why teeth bonding can be used to alter or restore the shape of teeth
  3. A discussion about the alignment of your teeth, and an analysis of whether or not teeth bonding and dental bonding are the best solution.

Next, he will share with you the options that will best address the needs of your teeth. In the event that bonding is not sufficient for restoring your smile to its very best, the doctor will also explain some of the other procedures that will serve your needs the best. All of this will be discussed with you during your private consultation before you decide on your personalized treatment plan.

Additionally, during the consultation patients will have a chance to ask any questions that patients might have about the procedure so that patients can be sure that they’re making the right choice for their situation.

After the consultation, the teeth bonding and dental bonding procedure can begin. The procedure is fairly simple, and doesn’t require much, if any, tooth preparation, so patients may not even need a local anesthetic.

Important Questions to ask the Doctor about Teeth Bonding

You may have a few questions about the procedure of dental bonding, and rightly so. Your concerns may include questions such as:

  • Am I a candidate for dental bonding?
  • How long will my teeth bonding last?
  • How should I care for my bonded teeth?
  • Is the procedure uncomfortable?

We are happy to answer any questions that you may have concerning the impact of bonding on your smile. Your initial consultation with the doctor allows us to focus on your personal goals and specific needs of your individual teeth.

The Teeth Bonding Process

First the doctor will prepare a simple resin putty to match the color and translucency of your teeth. Hardly any enamel preparation is needed for this procedure. You will likely not even need any local anesthetic. Your tooth or teeth will be roughened and conditioned with a special liquid. After the putty is placed on the tooth, the doctor will carefully craft it to adhere to the tooth and fill in the imperfections. Then, the material is hardened into place with a bright light. After it cures, the material is then polished to match the texture of your tooth and blend in with your smile. You will have a new-looking tooth in what is usually less than an hour! One visit is all it takes to complete the entire procedure.

The steps for teeth bonding are:

  1. A resin putty is prepared to match the translucency and color of the patient’s teeth
  2. The bonding site is treated with a special liquid to roughen it in preparation for the resin
  3. The resin putty is placed on the tooth or teeth
  4. The putty is delicately crafted to bond to the tooth, fill in any problem areas, and shaped appropriately
  5. The resin putty is hardened with a special light
  6. The resin is polished to match your tooth texture, helping it blend in with your smile

The procedure does not have any recovery time, and can usually be completed in less than an hour, oftentimes in a single visit. This is why so many Miami residents look to teeth bonding and dental bonding to repair their slightly damaged or misshapen teeth.

Teeth Bonding Summary

For teeth that are chipped or need a cavity filled, bonding is often the best solution. Compared to traditional filling material, the resin will not expand and contract with heat fluctuations in your mouth, one of the causes of cracked and loose fillings. The bonding resin can also be used to fill in slight gaps between teeth or cover the surface of a tooth to change its color and shape. A chipped and flared front tooth can be reshaped and fit seamlessly within the rest of your smile.
