Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is a critical element of the quality care you’ll encounter at Barsky DDS. When Dr. Barsky rebuilds a smile, he strives to do so in a way that restores its original strength, beauty, and functionality.

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is the art and science of repairing and restoring smiles with broken, missing, or damaged teeth. The ultimate goal is to help you, the patient, feel better about your appearance and enjoy the comfortable function of your teeth as you once did.

Restorative dentistry is different from cosmetic dentistry in that it doesn’t only seek to improve the appearance of a patient’s smile, but also focuses on rejuvenating the characteristics of a patient’s bite. This can have a number of health benefits, including expanding a patient’s diet, reducing sensitivity to pain, and stopping or reversing bone loss.

Specializing in prosthodontics, Dr. Barsky is able to create a variety of durable and natural-looking tooth-replacements. Part of the process of reconstructing a smile, however, also includes methods for repairing teeth themselves.

Restorative Dentistry vs Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry has inherent structural benefits, but restorative dentistry focuses on rejuvenating the function of your bite. By restoring areas of teeth that have been damaged by decay or fracture, the doctor is able to provide you once again with a functioning, yet beautiful smile.

Each one of our restorative services is hand crafted to reflect the best aesthetics available. Any combination of both cosmetic and restorative procedures may be part of your personal smile makeover. That’s why patients of Barsky DDS can also implement aesthetic dental treatments into their care services.

What Procedures are Involved in Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry can utilize a number of procedures to help enhance a patient’s smile and bite. Each of these techniques is used for different types of dental restoration, and a qualified prosthodontist can help a patient determine which procedures are right for them. Sometimes certain procedures will eliminate the need for other procedures, and sometimes different combinations of techniques can achieve better results for individual patients.

There are a number of procedures involved in restorative dentistry, and each patient is a unique case.

  • Dental Crowns
  • Dental Bridges
  • Dental Implants
  • Dentures
  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental Veneers

Restorative Dentistry Procedures commonly include:

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are protective covers that go over damaged teeth to prevent further damage and replicate a patient’s natural smile. They are used to cover slight damage, chips, and decay, and can help prevent bone loss and infection.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace several missing teeth in a row. They closely replicate the appearance of natural teeth and can help prevent jawbone deterioration, gum disease, and other complications, while at the same time restoring patient’s ability to chew foods and talk without pain and sensitivity.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial teeth permanently fixed into the jaw, may also involve bone grafting and jaw restoration procedures. In order to receive dental implants, a mental post is inserted into the jaw and a replacement cap is installed to replicate the patient’s smile. Dental implants can also be used to support a procedure called all-on-4, which involves using four implants to support a set of permanent bridges to restore the patient’s smile. Dental implants result in the closest replica of a natural smile, and are one of the most preferred options for restorative dentistry.

Partial and full dentures

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that restore bite functionality and enhance a patient’s smile. They can be used to replace one or several missing teeth, and there are a variety of denture options for patients to consider.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening removes stains from food and beverages, discoloration, and tobacco use to create a brighter smile. It uses a state of the art technique to lift stains from deep within the teeth to restore them to their brightest luster.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are porcelain covers for the front of teeth to protect cracks and create a whiter smile. They are expertly bonded to the tooth after it has been prepared to receive the veneers, resulting in straight, even, and white teeth.

Every patient’s smile has different needs and requirements. Dr. Barsky can help determine which procedures are best for an individual patient.

What is the Restorative Dentistry Process Like?

There is no set process for restorative dentistry, as each patient is different. However, there are some basic steps that patients can expect.

Your First Day Visiting Us

To get started on addressing your treatment needs, it’s essential that we first have a plan of action. We take care of this during your first appointment.

The first step in the restorative dentistry process always involves an examination and personal consultation. This visit will allow you to meet with Dr. Barsky, get familiar with our facility and discuss the complete details of the treatment plan the doctor recommends. During this consultation, the doctor will discuss with you what you desire to change about the shape, color, or alignment of your teeth and will address any immediate concerns you may have.

Dr. Barsky will use the information collected to create a customized restorative dentistry plan and detail the steps needed to achieve your dream smile. This plan may include a variety of both restorative and cosmetic treatment recommendations. With this information, both the doctor and the patient together can determine the best procedure or procedures to produce the desired results.

After determining the treatment plan, patients will schedule the appropriate appointments and the procedure process can begin. The patient will go through the procedures as recommended, and their progress and results will be monitored closely by Dr. Barsky to ensure the optimal results are achieved. Our goal is to have patients emerge at the end with the smile of their dreams.

Why consider Restorative Dentistry?

Opting to have restorative dental work done can help you to enjoy a better quality of life. Prior to having restorative work done you may suffer from:

  • Teeth sensitive to temperature and/or sweets
  • Toothaches
  • Sharp teeth with fractured edges
  • Food getting stuck between teeth
  • Unsightly gaps or chips
  • Missing teeth
  • Rough, uneven tooth surfaces

These concerns are typically for many restorative dentistry patients. The doctor employs restorative techniques to protect teeth, which may have been compromised in some way. He also strives to restore the function that teeth may have lost because of their broken structure.

What are the Benefits of Restorative Dentistry?

There are many benefits to restorative dentistry, for cosmetic as well as health and hygiene reasons.

Some of the cosmetic benefits include:

  • Whiter, bright smile
  • Straightened teeth
  • Complete smile
  • Smooth, even surfaces
  • Restoration or protection of cracks, chips, and fractures

The effect of these cosmetic benefits is frequently reported to be an enhanced sense of well-being, greater confidence, less anxiety and stress, more comfort in social situations, and a greater willingness to appear in pictures.

The health and hygiene benefits include:

  • Less pain and sensitivity when talking or chewing
  • Able to eat and chew foods that were difficult before
  • Treatment and prevention of toothaches
  • Food no longer stuck in sensitive areas of the teeth
  • Missing teeth replaced, preserving jawbone health and preventing infection.

Patients report that they are able to eat the foods that they enjoy and have missed after dental restoration. They also report a reduced sensitivity to pain while eating and talking. Others have reported that their restorative dentistry treatments allowed them to speak more clearly and sound natural.

Are You A Candidate for Restorative Dentistry?

In reality, anyone who has had a filling or at least a cavity in the past is already a good candidate for restorative dentistry. Restorative solutions repair damage caused by cavities and can even help to strengthen teeth that may have been weakened by old fillings. Even teeth without cavities might still benefit from some dental bonding such as front teeth with a chipped or uneven edge.

Meet Restorative Dentistry Expert and Board Certified Prosthodontist, Dr. Todd Barsky.

The Advantages of Using a Board-Certified Prosthodontist for Restorative Dentistry

A board certified prosthodontist must go through an additional intensive training after completing four years of dentistry school. This includes and closely supervised three year residency where they learn and practice the skills needed to make smiles not only functional, but beautiful. After the residency there are two additional years of certification before becoming board certified.

As a result, prosthodontists have the skills and experience, along with the perfect mix of cosmetic and oral health knowledge, to execute the procedures required by restorative dentistry. Only board-certified prosthodontists can bring this particular combination of cosmetic and practical talent

Should I get Restorative Dentistry?

If you have serious dental issues or damage to your teeth, then you may be a candidate for restorative dentistry. Restorative dentistry should is not a decision to take lightly, and should be made in conjunction with a qualified prosthodontist. Dr. Barsky has the skills and experience to help determine the best restorative dentistry plan of action for your smile.
