Treatment Plan for Full Mouth

It all starts with a consultation at Dr. Barky’s private practice in South Miami. During your visit, the doctor will listen to your concerns and goals – and then thoroughly examine your smile to suggest the appropriate plan that fits your individual smile.

Your treatment plan will involve repairing or replacing teeth throughout your entire mouth. Your smile will look and feel exactly the way you always hoped that it would. Each and every tooth will be addressed individually, to create a healthy and esthetic smile that is functioning correctly.

As Part of your consultation we will gather your opinions and goals for your new smile. That way we can design your teeth to resemble the aesthetic appearance you desire – as well as restoring their health.

Full Mouth Reconstruction Procedure Options

There is no one full mouth reconstruction procedure, as every patient is a unique case and will be handled that way. Depending on the structural integrity and aesthetics of each tooth, the doctor will likely use a combination of treatments which are listed below.

1. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are artificial teeth placed over chipped, broken, or otherwise damaged teeth to provide protection and support. Dental crowns also create the impression of natural teeth, and help make a patient’s smile brighter and whiter than it was before. They can be used to shield teeth from further trauma, and decrease pain and sensitivity when talking or chewing. Dental crowns can also be used in a row to form a dental bridge, which can replace several sequential missing teeth.

2. Porcelain Crowns

A full-coverage porcelain crown will restore both beauty as well as functionality to your specific tooth. Each of our crowns is made of durable, beautiful porcelain materials to mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Porcelain can be customized to the shade and hue of the doctor’s exact specifications, so that it resembles the same color as the teeth adjacent to it.  Learn more about dental crowns.

Your new crown will:

  • Return natural function to your bite
  • Appear as if it were a real tooth
  • Be durable enough for everyday use
  • Correct aesthetic irregularities such as tooth shape or color

Crowns are usually appropriate when teeth have experienced severe wear, decay, or have large, old fillings that need to be removed. We also use them for restoring dental implants, in situations where missing teeth are involved.

3. Dental Veneers

If your tooth is healthy and does not require a crown, then a dental veneer may be the most appropriate approach to enhancing the appearance. Dental veneers are thin sheets of porcelain placed on the front of the teeth that cover the tooth. Dental veneers are used to repair and protect chips, cracks, stains, and discoloration to the front of the teeth. In order to get dental veneers, teeth are filed down to make room for the veneers, which can then be bonded to the teeth by a trained oral health professional. Dental veneers are an extremely useful tool in full mouth reconstruction, especially if many veneers are placed side by side, altering the entire smile at once. Dental veneers can also help straighten the teeth and can help make the toothlines even and straight.

Material: Each veneer is made of a thin layer of porcelain that the doctor applies to the portion of your tooth that is visible when you smile.
Results: Reflect the natural appearance of straight, beautiful teeth.

Our veneers help your smile by changing the following aspects of your teeth:

  • Alignment
  • Color
  • Shape

How do veneers work: Placing several veneers side-by-side is one of the most dramatic ways to transform your entire smile at once. They can easily be combined alongside of teeth that are restored with porcelain crowns, as the materials are nearly identical.

4. Implant Restorations

Replacing missing teeth is an integral part of any smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction. Dental implants are the choice procedure for replacing missing teeth – whether it is one, or a full arch.

5. Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most popular and common procedures used in full mouth reconstruction. Dental implants involve a number of steps. First the jawbone will be evaluated and a determination will be made regarding the need for bone grafts or bone regeneration to strengthen the jawbone. Broken or damaged teeth are removed, and metal posts are fixed into the jawbone. Once the posts have set and healed, a series of caps and artificial teeth are placed on the metal posts. This creates a smile as near as natural as possible and provides support for other oral health procedures.

Dental implants can also be used for a procedure called all-on-4 implants. This procedure involves placing as few as four implants and using them to support a permanent, fixed bridge and denture set up that will replace a patient’s entire smile. This can be a good procedure for individuals who cannot or do not wish to have the bone grafts necessary for full dental implants. It can also be a cheaper alternative to dental implants for some patients.

6. Dentures

Dentures are sets of replacement teeth that may be removable or fixed in place. They can be taken out for easier cleaning and comfort. Dentures can be a good option for many patients, and help restore smiles while making it easier to chew and eat food. Dentures are also a more affordable option than some other full mouth reconstruction options.

Should I get Full Mouth Reconstruction?

If you need your entire smile fixed, or have serious dental issues affecting most of your mouth, then you may be a candidate for full mouth reconstruction. A procedure like full mouth reconstruction should not be taken lightly, and should only be made in consultation with a board certified prosthodontist. Dr. Barsky has the skills and experience that are necessary to determine the best course of action for your full mouth reconstruction. He can help patients determine the optimal procedures to ensure their full mouth reconstruction is as fast and effective as possible.

The Advantages of using a Prosthodontist for Full Mouth Reconstruction

Patients who are considering full mouth reconstruction should choose an oral health professional who is specialized in the different cosmetic and health aspects that the process entails. A prosthodontist must spend an additional three years in an intensive and closely monitored residency after the standard four years of dentistry school. After residency, prosthodontists can apply for board certification, which involves another two year process, including rigorous examinations. While they are in residency and undergoing prosthodontist certification, a prosthodontist undergoes training and practice in the artistic and medical techniques needed to complete a complex procedure like full mouth reconstruction.

Only after these stringent standards have been met does a prosthodontist become board certified. This means that they have the skills and experience needed to use the latest dental techniques and technologies to produce the best cosmetic and physiological results in a full mouth reconstruction.
