Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used for advanced smile makeover procedures. Dr.Barsky is an expert in Miami at using dental crowns for broken and damaged teeth.

A confident smile is the key to a confident lifestyle. Unfortunately, everyday life events can result in lost or damaged teeth, causing bad breath, discoloration, unsightly smiles, and difficulty chewing and eating. Dental crowns are one of the most popular remedies for repairing chipped or broken teeth among Miami residents.

Dr. Barsky Discusses Dental Crowns

Our porcelain dental crowns make it possible to provide advanced smile makeover procedures and smile rehabilitation for broken and damaged teeth. Unlike other types of cosmetic dental services, a porcelain crown covers your entire natural tooth up to the gumlines – completely changing the way it looks, feels, and functions inside of your mouth. A crown serves a dual purpose, in that it can return both health as well as confidence to your smile.

Each and every crown is handcrafted to resemble the size, shape, and color that is most beneficial to your individual smile. The design process is quite complex, which is why the doctor supervises the procedure from start to finish.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is one of the most common remedies for chipped or broken teeth. It consists of a cap which is installed over the tooth. The cap is shaped like a tooth, and is designed to supplement the chipped or broken tooth. This helps patients feel more confident in their smile and makes chewing easier.

Many patients find that dental crowns help restore their confidence by improving their smile, and making it easier to enjoy their favorite foods.

Dr. Barsky Q&A: How long do Dental Crowns last?

How Does a Dental Crown Work?

Dental crowns cover the broken or damaged element of the tooth, hiding it from view and protecting it from further damage. Dental crowns come in a wide array of materials, which allows a prosthodontist to ensure that each patient gets the solution most appropriate to their particular situation.

The Dental Crown Treatment Process

After your initial consultation, getting a dental crown usually involves two office visits.

Step 1 of Dental Crown Treatment

The first treatment appointment is for the initial preparation. This allows us to create personalized crowns that fit your bite to the doctor’s precise requirements. To do this, the doctor will prepare the teeth for the crown, get the information needed to make the crown including taking an impression, and installing a temporary crown.

Steps included in the first visit are:

  1. Examination – the patient will have x-rays taken to evaluate root decay. If there is substantial decay or a risk of infection, then a root canal will have to be scheduled and performed.
  2. Preparation – the tooth and surrounding area will be numbed. The tooth receiving the crown is then filed down to create room to install the crown. If the tooth is already broken or severely damaged, it will be reinforced with filling material and built up to support the crown.
  3. Molding – a mold, or impression, of the tooth is taken. Usually impressions are created with putty or paste, but digital scanning is also used. The teeth surrounding the crown site will also be cast in the impression to ensure the crown does not interfere with the patient’s bite.
  4. Temporary Crown – a temporary crown, usually made of resin, is installed over the prepared tooth to protect it while the crown is being manufactured.

At this point the first visit is complete. The impressions are used by a dental laboratory, either off-site or in-house, which will manufacture the crown.

Step 2 of Dental Crown Treatment

Once the crown has been delivered to the dentist, the patient will have their second appointment for the installation of the permanent crown. Patients tend to agree that the procedure is relatively fast, easy, and painless, making it one of the most commonly used remedies for broken or damaged teeth.

Next, the doctor will place a cosmetic temporary crown over your tooth. This will protect your tooth from unnecessary sensitivity, as well as preserve smile aesthetics until your permanent crown is ready. Under strict guidance by the doctor, your new permanent crown will be handcrafted in our state of the art laboratory, down to the precise texture, shade, color and shape.

Your new tooth crown will look:

  • Straighter
  • Whiter
  • Fuller
  • Healthy

Once completed, we will have you return to Barsky DDS for the doctor to gently remove the temporary crown and bond the permanent one into place. Then the fit and function of the crown will be carefully assessed, so that the tooth falls into perfect alignment and occlusion (bite) with the teeth surrounding it.

Q&A with Dr. Barsky: What materials are used in Dental Crowns?

Some common crown materials are:

  • Metal – There are a number of different metals used to form dental crowns. Stainless steel may be used for a temporary crown or a crown for children’s temporary teeth. Other metal alloys used include gold, palladium, chrome, and nickel. Metal crowns are the best at resisting wear, but cannot be color matched to a patient’s natural teeth
  • Resin – Crowns made from resin are the least expensive, but also the least wear-resistant. As a result, they are more likely to break or need replacement. Resin crowns are frequently used as a temporary measure while a permanent crown is being crafted at a dental laboratory.
  • Ceramic – Crowns made from ceramics or porcelain are the best at matching the color of a patient’s natural teeth. Ceramic crowns are also appealing to patients that are allergic to metals.
  • Porcelain-Metal Fusion – A crown crafted with porcelain fused to metal is very good at matching the color of a patient’s natural teeth, while at the same time providing added strength and durability.

As you can see, there are a number of different options when it comes to dental crowns. If you live in South Florida, Dr. Barsky can help determine the best dental crown treatment for your particular situation.

Candidates for Dental Crowns

We may recommend crowns alone, or in combination with other treatments like veneers or dental implants depending on your specific smile needs. Some of the reasons why we may recommend a crown include concerns such as:

  • Teeth that are badly worn, chipped, or broken
  • Moderate to significant aesthetic concerns
  • Following root canal therapy
  • To cover dying, discolored teeth
  • To restore ultimate function and aesthetics to your smile
  • For individual tooth replacement over dental implants
  • Creating teeth that look straighter and fuller

The doctor will meet with you personally, to determine whether or not our porcelain crowns will be appropriate for your smile needs. When you visit The MIAMI Institute, you skip the waiting room and walk right into your very own, private consultation suite. We even have our own private elevator and entrance at The Four Seasons Hotel! Your privacy and comfort is an essential part of our services.

As soon as you arrive, you will be greeted by our patient coordinator, and then joined by the doctor to discuss your goals, concerns, and oral health. We will walk you step-by-step through every option available, and make appropriate recommendations regarding the best reconstructive choice for your smile. It may be necessary to discuss additional options, such as veneers or dental implants as part of your smile makeover.

What is Dental Crown Recovery Like?

Patients who get dental crowns have almost no recovery time. The procedure requires only a local anesthetic, so patients can resume their day once the procedure is over. The only recovery is waiting for the numbing agent to wear off, during which the patient may experience some difficulty with cups and straws. The short recovery time is one of the aspects that make dental crowns so appealing to many in the Miami area.

What Results Can I Expect from Dental Crowns?

Patients report more confidence and less anxiety after receiving dental crowns. Additionally, patients have said that they can eat food and chew more easily, including tough, chewy, or sticky foods. Dental crowns also protect the underlying tooth from further damage, and can prevent bone loss, infection, and other complications.

Should I Get Dental Crowns?

Many patients find that dental crowns are their preferred solution for broken or damaged teeth. Patients may be a candidate for dental crowns if one or more of the following apply:

  • Broken or damaged tooth that needs to be protected, including protection from breaking
  • Broken or worn down tooth that needs to be restored
  • Dental bridge needs support
  • Tooth implant needs to be covered
  • Protect a tooth that has a large filling
  • Broken, discolored, or misshapen teeth that need corrected
  • Cosmetic alteration

Crowns as Part of Your Smile Makeover

Like other types of aesthetic dental treatments, crowns can transform the way your entire smile looks. But, they also serve a very important role – restoring the function and durability of badly damaged or decayed teeth.

When teeth are badly compromised, smaller, cosmetic dental fillings are not appropriate. Unlike a restoration that “fills” the damaged portion of a tooth, a crown surrounds the entire tooth so that the structural integrity is preserved. This allows the doctor to assist you in retaining your natural teeth, yet completely change the way they look!

Dental Crowns Summary

If you are having a missing tooth replaced with a permanent dental implant, then the doctor will create a custom, porcelain crown to place on top of the implant abutment. This creates the appearance of a brand new, independent tooth. Just like your natural teeth, an implant crown can withstand normal daily use and is extremely easy to maintain.

Is a Dental Crown Right for You?

If you’ve struggled with feeling embarrassed about your smile, or have teeth that are continually chipping, breaking, or wearing away – then our comprehensive porcelain crowns are an excellent answer.

About Dental Crown Treatments with Dr. Barsky

Dental Crown treatments at The MIAMI Institute to reflect the most natural form, function, and appearance.

Many dentists provide “porcelain” crowns that still include a metal base. Porcelain fused to metal crowns can create serious aesthetic concerns. Not only can the porcelain flake off of the base, leaving exposed metal, but a dark grey line will be visible along your gums as soon as the crown is placed.

At Barsky DDS we use only full porcelain crowns that are completely free of metal – providing you with a durable yet beautiful alternative to everyday cosmetic crowns.
