Research on Flossing
It’s true that there has been very little research focused singularly on the benefits of flossing. The data in the reports indicate that there is low to no proof that flossing actually does anything for oral health. In fact, some even draw the conclusion that the dental industry and flossing manufacturers are only in the business of making money rather than really helping patients. On paper, it certainly appears that more research could be conducted, but dentists aren’t quite ready to tell their patients to stop flossing altogether.

What Dentists Say
Perhaps the focus should be in how research is conducted. Dental professionals have pointed out; it would be more helpful to focus studies on individuals who are at higher risk for gum disease such as people who are diabetic. Not to mention, many individuals fail to floss correctly which can lead to poorer results. It should also be included that there are studies that do support that flossing can reduce swelling which in turn can help prevent gum disease.
The idea that flossing should be completely ignored is certainly not something that dentists are ready to throw to the wayside. However, additional investigation in an admittedly under-researched area of dental health is certainly something worth investing time and energy into.
The fact remains that if you ask 100 dentists about the benefits of flossing, 99 or 100 will report that they see the advantages for the patient’s teeth. The reality is that flossing does help remove debris and plaque that can otherwise cause bad breath, cavities, inflammation, and ultimately gum disease. Even if further study proves that the benefits are minimal, it would certainly be an injustice to dental health to discontinue the practice altogether.
